Food Additives Electronic Handbook

The Food Additives Electronic Handbook describes 5,000 trade names and 2,500 chemicals that function as food additives. Entries for both trade names and chemicals contain extensive information gathered world wide from manufacturers, distributors, trade journals, government documents, and other references.

This comprehensive reference functions as a single source for information on both the trade name products and the chemicals that are used as food additives throughout the world. It includes summaries of regulatory information for the United States, Europe, and Japan. The products described in this handbook are cross-referenced in multiple ways: chemical composition, function, CAS number, EINECS number, FEMA number, and E number.

The Food Additives Electronic Handbook will guide you easily through the maze of identifying, classifying, and selecting the most appropriate products for your specific requirements. The Electronic Handbook enables you to navigate through the information using powerful query operators for simple or advanced searches allowing you to: quickly traverse the database (for example, Manufacturers X-Ref can display the jump-to a single manufacturer's products); access every word, phrase, or combination in the reference; jump-to or pop-up trade name chemicals, manufacturers, or regulations.

The reference is divided into four sections:

Part I—Trade Name Reference contains 5,000 alphabetical entries of trade name food additive products. Each entry includes information on its manufacturer, chemical composition, CAS and EINECS identifying numbers, general properties, applications and functions, toxicology, compliance, and regulatory information as provided by the manufacturer and other sources.

Part II—Chemical Dictionary/Cross-Reference contains an alphabetical listing of 2,500 food chemicals. Each food chemical entry includes, wherever possible, its synonyms, CAS number, EINECS number, FEMA number, and E number, formulas, chemical properties, function and application, toxicology, precautions, usage level, and regulatory information, as well as some of the manufacturers of the chemical. The trade name products from Part I that are equivalent to the chemical or contain that chemical compound as the trade name product’s major chemical constituent are cross-referenced. Synonyms for these chemical entries are comprehensively cross-referenced back to the main entry.

Part III—Functional Cross-Reference contains an alphabetical listing of major food additive functional categories. Over 30 categories are included (see listing at right) and each functional category entry is followed by an alphabetical listing of the trade name products and food chemicals that have that functional attribute.

Part IV—Manufacturers Directory contains detailed contact information for the manufacturers of the trade name products and food chemicals referenced in this handbook. Wherever possible telephone, telefax, and telex numbers, toll-free 800 numbers, and complete mailing addresses are included for each manufacturer.

The Appendices contain the following cross-references:

CAS Number-to-Trade Name Cross-Reference
Orders many trade names found in Part I by identifying CAS numbers; it should be noted that trade names may contain more than one chemical component and the associated CAS numbers in this section refer to each trade name product’s primary chemical component.

CAS Number-to-Chemical Cross-Reference
Orders chemical compounds found in Part II by CAS numbers.

EINECS Number-to-Trade Name Cross-Reference
Orders many trade names found in Part I by identifying EINECS numbers that refer to each trade name product’s primary hemical component.

EINECS Number-to Chemical Cross-Reference
Orders chemicals found in Part II by EINECS numbers.

FEMA Number-to-Chemical Cross-Reference
Orders flavor and extract chemicals that are found in Part II by Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) numbers.

The Tables of Food Regulations
Summarizes of food additive regulatory information for the United States, Europe, and Japan and includes chemical names, functions, usage levels, and limitations.
