Qualitative Cation DetectiveTM
Qualitative Cation Detective is a useful tool for the identification of
unknown metal ions by precipitation. The program will assist the user in
the identification of Pb, Ag, Hg, Sn, Cu, Bi, Mn, Ni, Fe, Al, Zn, Ca, Ba,
Mg, Na, K, Li, and NH4 ("Chemical Principles", William Masterton,1977 Identification
of Unknown Metal Ions by Precipitation). The ions are divided into five
general classes. Group I - Insoluble Chlorides, Group II - Acid-insoluble
Sulfides, Group III - Base-insoluble sulfides, Group IV - Insoluble Carbonates,
and Group V - The alkali metal ions and NH4. The filtrate from each precipitation
becomes the test solution for the next reagent. Interclass separations
are then performed on the precipitates from each class. Qualitative Cation
Detective is easy to understand and use as it virtually "walks" the user
through the steps necessary to reach a qualitative conclusion of the presence
of inorganic constituents in an unknown sample. (Requires Windows 3.1,
95 or NT).
