Although prevention is the primary emphasis of safety, it is recognized that significant hazards are present in a number of laboratory situations. Safety equipment, if used correctly and quickly, can save lives, health and property. As with any other lab equipment, training is necessary for effective and efficient use. This course will enable the student to become familiar with the following lab safety equipment:
Thorough discussion is presented on the different types of fire extinguishers and extinguishing agents available. Considerations to make on whether to fight a fire or call for help are presented. A simple method for using a fire extinguisher is demonstrated. A list of inspection items and general maintenance procedures is listed.
The ANSI 358.1-1998 standard covering eye washes and emergency showers is covered, with information presented on flow, location, testing and inspection, temperatures, alarm systems, visibility and training.
