• BNP is a sensitive biomarker for ventricular performance:

  • Left ventricular dysfunction:
    • Even detectable in NYHA Class I patients
    • Ventricular hypertrophy
    • Congestive heart failure
  • Prognosis after myocardial infarct:
    • Cardiovascular mortality
    • Left ventricular ejection fraction
    • Left ventricular remodeling
    • Ability to reflect regional wall stressand changes in local myocardialperformance due to ischemia
